audience and institutions essay - ownership and funding

Media ownership and funding is very important in regards to the success of a film. The oligopoly; the Big 5 dominate the film market share which largely benefits them and the media content they produce. Their power creates competition for smaller indie creators who often don't have the funds to come out on top, however there are exceptions. Despite the Big 5's large advantage, there are small indie creators and New Zealand films who have been able to get their names out there. This levelled playing field links to Shirky's 'end of audience' theory. The theory simply states that the audience not only consume media but produce it too, coining the term 'prosumer'.  Large companies frequently benefit from franchises as they build fan bases. Franchises are movies that feature sequels and prequels which can be created a few years after one another or even a decade or two. Since people are typically more at ease with ideas they have seen before and because it will

War of the Worlds example

In 1938, Orson Welles started a radio broadcast segment which featured the storytelling of the book War of the Worlds. Due to scheduling issues and the way in which the story was told (like an actual news segment) many of the audience who listened believed that what they were listening to was fact, not fiction. This created panic throughout the country as people genuinely thought an invasion was happening. This is an example of a passive audience which links to Stuart Hall's reception theory. The theory talks to this idea that the producer encodes messages for the audience to decode which in some cases is not always decoded in the way the producer originally intended. This example also links to the hypodermic needle theory which creates this concept that the audience are simply being injected with information and accepting it for what it is with no opposition. Due to the high panic; the police received many complaints even from people who hadn't even listened to the broadcast b

NZ context/perspective on the development of streaming services

On Friday (5/08/2022), the newly merged Warner Bros Discovery announced it would be combining its streaming services  –  that’s HBO Max and Discovery+  –  and  taking those brands global .   The new service isn’t just going to be full of HBO content. It includes all Warner Bros movies, plus every piece of content from Sony Pictures, DC and Discovery+. Cartoon Network, Adult Swim, Bad Robot, Comedy Central and The CW Netflix is overloading viewers with increasingly dire options, cutting back on account sharing and introducing ads as it pares back costs in the face of   declining subscriber numbers . Cashed-up competitors are taking wild swings, like Amazon Prime Video’s  mega-budget Lord of the Rings  series, or Disney+ bringing back Ewan McGregor as Obi-Wan Kenobi. Apple TV+ is spending gazillions and winning Emmys, yet I still don’t know anyone who pays actual money for it. Sky has had exclusive New Zealand streaming rights to HBO’s vast library of content, and has built several chann

are theatres dead?

from article written in may 2022 Conventional wisdom tells us box office hauls have been down because of the pandemic, and we should give it time. But Spider-Man: No Way Home shattered that perception, at least a bit. It broke records in its opening weekend as fears of the Omicron variant peaked. More titles like The Batman and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness have followed suit. Even an indie film like Everything Everywhere All at Once has  proved mighty  at the box office. Box office numbers have been bleak since early 2020, when the world changed. But there’s been talk of streaming replacing movie theaters since long before that. Big-name auteurs like Alfonso CuarĂ³n and Martin Scorsese had already made the jump to streaming before the pandemic, with their films Roma and The Irishman released as Netflix originals in 2018 and 2019 respectively. Those years also saw the release of massive blockbusters in theaters though. Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame both bro
