planning: In this scene from the crime drama; Breaking Bad we can see a representation of age and gender. Age is contrasted to portray the idea that someone who is younger is out of depth, nervous, and can never really fulfil tasks given to them. In contrast, an older person is shown to be knowledgeable and put together. Gender is also heavily represented in regards to the male gender as we only see encounters between men. They are portrayed as the ones who will break the law, are dominant and may get into a fight. Comparatively we only notice women doing typical things like shopping or serving customers at the till. They are only used as side characters. In this clip from Grey’s Anatomy, a prevalent theme of gender comes through ; p articularly the element of women empowerment. A patient who is just about to enter surgery is seen to be supported by all the women the hospital has to offer. There is one nurse who seems to have a stronger bond with the patient and specifically helps her throughout this scene. This clip portrays unconventional elements but also many elements of realism.   The interaction between the two male doctors at the beginning of the scene immediately set up this unconventional gender element. As one doctor tries to enter a hallway the other one stops him which sets up an enigma of what is going on. The audience are immediately interested in what are behind those doors. The doctor then allows a women to walk through the doors in which the doctor replies 'but she can go' which creates irony and although not intentional a moment where the classic roles of a male being superior are switched. Gender and class and status are represented in this opening scene from Downtown Abbey. We are immediately introduced to a multitude of maids which are all interestingly enough; women. This representation is very stereotypical as the role of maids cleaning or working in the kitchen is very common for women. Especially as this show is based in the 1910's we are not shocked to see women portrayed this way. However, we are introduced to a few male workers. It is interesting to note that they are given different jobs that may be perceived as more responsible like being assistant to the main man of the house or delivering the mail. So although they may appear to be in the same class as their female counterparts there is still this sense of male authority and dominance. These scenes from Bourne Identity convey a message of the character; Jason Bourne moving away from his past and moving towards his new life and identity. This is portrayed through the use of the four technical elements of camera, editing, sound and mis-en-scene. The title of the movie; Bourne Identity already has a huge significance in the meaning of the film and gives information to the audience. Although not spelt the same; the name 'Bourne' resembles the word born and this is simply what we see portrayed throughout the movie. Jason Bourne is unveiling his new identity and almost re-birthing into a different person. In these first couple of scenes we can clearly sense this mood as we see Jason not just literally but also figuratively walking into his new identity and walking away from his past.
