essay tips for audience and institution essays

 media ownership

  • big 5 took about 63% box office revenue in 2012
  • all the studios (subsidiaries) are able to have big budgets due to being owned by large conglomerates; they are able to appeal to a mass audience by using special effects, CGI, impressive set designs and big name stars simply because they have the money to do so
layout:
  • intro
  • big 5
    • stats
    • what they use with the money they have
    • how this is attractive to an audience

    • how this is beneficial to the conglomerate it is owned by

cross-media convergence and synergy
  • Disney is made up of 5 different divisions:
    • Walt Disney studios (film studios, record labels)
    • media networks (television channels)
    • Disney interactive (video games, web based media)
  • Disney has been described as 'masters of media synergy' --> an example: Hannah Montana
    • television series
    • theatrically released film
    • soundtrack albums
    • magazines
    • merchandise
    • online games
  • helps maximise ancillary revenue
  • another example: Toy Story 3 (2010)
    • Toy Story day on Disney channel leading up to the release
    • release of a video game on Disney interactive
    • toy story day would attract viewers to Disney channel while simultaneously promoting the film
  • the key advantage of synergy is that it maximises revenue whilst promoting the brand and benefits all subsidiaries involved
  • indie companies do not have the same budget and resources to use synergy the same way big studios do

technology

3D
  • 3D booms in the past (1950s and 1980s) --> have been short lived due to bad image quality issues
  • James Cameron and Vince Page developed Sony 3D-T which captured stereoscopic vision
    • could use 3D effectively in the production of Avatar (2009)
    • film achieved the highest box office gross of $2.7 billion
  • benefits of 3D is that studios can charge more for tickets meaning more money is being accumulated for less tickets
  • this encouraged more films to be produced this way like Toy Story 3, Alice in Wonderland and the Avengers
  • 3D is also beneficial in that it is less likely to get pirated due to the technology
  • it also encourage people to go watch the movie in the actual cinema
  • however although it had huge box office success; avatar was still the most pirated film of all time being watched illegally 21 million times
  • 3D ticket sales accounted for 24% of UK box office revenue in 2010
  • Peter Jackson (Hobbit) --> "a more immersive experience"

CGI/motion capture
  • Tron: Legacy (2010) --> about 90% of background images was made by CGI
  • offers the opportunity to create a more impressive viewing experience with visually spectacular images --> increases success of film if done good
  • high costs mean only big studios can really do it leaving a disadvantage for independent companies
