CCR questions (preliminary task 1) - planning

CCR - Preliminary Task One question 1 conventions used: suspenseful/eerie music low lighting, blue hue vulnerability of protagonist in presence of antagonist continuity editing hand held camera work bloody smiley face balloon blood smeared title narrative revolving around antagonist close-ups location - outside; abandoned carpark diegetic: dialogue - "smile" fade to black sound (non-diegetic) The main mood in regards to the non-diegetic sound of my film was to attain a score that was suspenseful and eerie. I believe in my final edit this achieved through the use of many music layerings i found through premier pro (the editing system I'm working with). I wanted music that resembled suspense to achieve that basic convention of a thriller but I also wanted an eerie mood due to the actual plot line of the film as it revolves around a serial killer. I also used a sound effect of a heartbeat to symbolise the way the victim was feeling and also raise the adrenaline of the audi...

Downtown Abbey representation practise

Image
Gender and class and status are represented in this opening scene from Downtown Abbey. We are immediately introduced to a multitude of maids which are all interestingly enough; women. This representation is very stereotypical as the role of maids cleaning or working in the kitchen is very common for women. Especially as this show is based in the 1910's we are not shocked to see women portrayed this way. However, we are introduced to a few male workers. It is interesting to note that they are given different jobs that may be perceived as more responsible like being assistant to the main man of the house or delivering the mail. So although they may appear to be in the same class as their female counterparts there is still this sense of male authority and dominance. There is a contrast in this class and status when we are introduced to the upper class of people. The main observation being that the wealthy people may wake up whenever they like but the lower class have a set time to wak...

Opening Sequences

Image
What is the purpose of opening sequences? An opening sequence is the way in which film, TV and video games present their key production and cast members along with the title. It will typically involve sounds and visuals that are related to that of the media being presented. It usually helps establish the setting and tone. Opening sequences convey important information in regards to the concept of the media but also about the people involved. These are known as the opening credits.  The main purpose of an opening sequence is to set the scene . The opening sequence will ultimately define the mood and tone for the rest of the film. It gives the audience an insight into what they may they encounter without giving away too much detail. The establishing shot  is the most common technique used to do this. It sets the atmosphere; the audience can begin to understand where the characters are set in the world of the film. What is the difference between opening credits and a title...

Bourne Identity Essay

These scenes from Bourne Identity convey a message of the character; Jason Bourne moving away from his past and moving towards his new life and identity. This is portrayed through the use of the four technical elements of camera, editing, sound and mis-en-scene. The title of the movie; Bourne Identity already has a huge significance in the meaning of the film and gives information to the audience. Although not spelt the same; the name 'Bourne' resembles the word born and this is simply what we see portrayed throughout the movie. Jason Bourne is unveiling his new identity and almost re-birthing into a different person. In these first couple of scenes we can clearly sense this mood as we see Jason not just literally but also figuratively walking into his new identity and walking away from his past. A series of close up shots have been used in these scenes to reveal information to the audience and emphasise key moments. As we follow Jason as he travels, we experience a small momen...

Creating Suspense

Image
3 Ways Steven Spielberg creates suspense: creates empathy with the audience. (jaws) makes fishing rod very large with a low angle looking up --> makes the audience look and aware of the tiny detail of the line pulling. (jaws) jumps between subjective and objective perspective. (jaws) breaking up a series of action shots with close ups. (jaws) a close up on hands to show minor details that actually have a major impact on the way the audience feels. (the colour purple) once again watching hands to show a potential murder weapon --> interestingly the murder weapon of whom; either the wife as she murders her husband or the husband as he threatens her with a simple "you cut me and I'll kill you". This leaves an intense and eerie feeling with the audience. (the colour purple) keeps panning camera instead of cutting to a different shot in order to not cut the momentum of the scene. (the colour purple) close up on blade and sounds of shaving turns something innocen...

Props and Costumes (preliminary task 1)

Image
Props and Costumes: Props: For props we have gone with a knife as the main murder weapon. The knife will be used by the serial killer when they murder the victim. The serial killer will be seen giving the knife a grand reveal towards the end of the film as they will dramatically pull it out of their pocket. Blood will then be used after this to show the impactful affects of the knife. Blood will be used to not only symbolise death of the victim but the utterly gruesome way in which it occurred. The blood will be seen pouring out of the victim and creating a pool of blood. It will be very clearly evident as the victim will be wearing white. The ingredients and recipe for the blood are: teaspoon of flour half a teaspoon of red food colouring tablespoon of corn syrup one drop of blue food colouring A mobile phone will be used by the victim in the beginning to represent and imply danger. The victim will receive  a text message from an anonymous person (killer). The messag...
